Psoriasis is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by red, scaly patches that can be itchy, painful and unsightly. While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are a number of effective treatment options available, including over-the-counter products, lifestyle changes and medical treatment.

At Mid-County Dermatology, we understand that living with psoriasis can be challenging, which is why we offer a comprehensive management approach to help our patients control their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life.

One of the first steps in managing psoriasis is to use over-the-counter products that can help to reduce inflammation and itching. Topical corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone cream, are a common treatment option for mild to moderate psoriasis. Another over-the-counter option is salicylic acid, which can help to soften and remove scales. Coal tar products, such as Neutrogena T-Gel and Psoriasin, can also be effective in reducing itching and scaling.

In addition to over-the-counter products, lifestyle changes can also play a crucial role in managing psoriasis symptoms. Keeping the skin moisturized is important, as dry skin can worsen psoriasis. Using a good quality, fragrance-free moisturizer, such as Cetaphil or Cerave, can help to soothe dry, itchy skin.

Another important lifestyle change is to avoid triggers that can worsen psoriasis symptoms. These can include stress, smoking, alcohol, and certain foods.

For those with moderate to severe psoriasis, medical treatment may be necessary. Topical and systemic medications, such as topical retinoids, methotrexate, Otezla, Cellcept, Sotyktu, NBUVB light therapy, and biologics (Skyrizi, Tremfya, Taltz, Cosentyx), can help to control inflammation and reduce the severity of psoriasis. Our dermatology team, located at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Town & Country will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan that takes into account the severity of your psoriasis and your overall health.

It's important to remember that psoriasis is a chronic condition and managing it is a lifelong process. However, with the right combination of over-the-counter products, lifestyle changes and medical treatment, it is possible to control symptoms and improve the overall quality of life. We are dedicated to helping our patients with psoriasis live their best lives.
